What is God’s purpose for giving us discernment? When does compassion trump judgment? Under what circumstances should judgment trump compassion? How did Jesus model this?

In John 16:33 Jesus tells His disciples to be of good cheer (KJV). In what settings did He say this? What is He specifically instructing or encouraging them to do? How do you apply this in your life? How have you experienced this “good cheer” before? What will you do to obey this word in similar settings?

A deep and personal relationship with God brings about great confidence. How is this expressed in your life? What would others say about your confidence level? In what circumstances or situations do you lack confidence? How would God like you to react to those situations?

We agreed that our seeming boldness in prayer is a direct result of the dept of our relationship with God. What do you do to increase your understanding of God? How do you experience His emotions? Where does His will and yours converge? Where do they diverge? How would you encourage someone younger in the faith to pursue real relationship with God?

We agreed that God does allow us to exercise our free will, and that He is willing to limit His actions but does not limit His unfailing love. How bold should we be in our prayers? Does it make a difference to you if you are asking God to do something for yourself or another? What happens to the person that dares to argue with God? What does your prayer life demonstrate about your relationship with God?

God is sovereign, all powerful, and all knowing. Some confusion arises in conversations about His ability, authority and responsibility for circumstances on earth. Why would He accept limitations? What should God get the credit or blame for regarding “natural” disasters? How can He be subject to our will when He has power over us? What does this mean for those that have a relationship with Him? What does it mean to those that maintain their independence from Him?

Psalm 25:14 promises that God will confide in, or reveal secrets to, those that fear Him. He did so with Abraham regarding Sodom, and Moses regarding the Israelites. How does this level of confidence influence a relationship? Who can be qualified for such closeness? How is your life changed by hearing God’s secret(s)?

Everyone that conquers is promised a new name written on a white stone, this is found in Revelation 2:17. What is the Biblical significance of a new name? How are names, identities and callings related in your life? What can you know about the new name God has for you? What adjustments should you make in your “name calling” based on these truths?

Whenever a group has cohesion there seems to be some commonality that attracts and keeps members together, such as language, experience, or responsibility. What keeps Christians together? What is unique about us that would not be found in a secular team or group setting? What examples have you seen of Christians united by a secular force? How can we improve our unity?
