Discussion question for January 16, 2015.

The first Biblical mention of pain is in the description of the curse of sin (Genesis 3).  How do you explain the association between pain and sin?  What relief is there for mankind?  What relief is there specifically for children of God?  Is pain ever good?  What practical advice can you give a believer or non-believer about pain?

Jesus said that His followers have to deny themselves and take up a cross (Matthew 10:38), but He also invited His followers to put on an easy yoke (Matthew 11:29-30).  How do you “take up a cross?”  What effect does that have on your life?  How do you put on a yoke?  What effect does that have on your life?  How do you reconcile these two ideas?

In Galatians 5:25 Paul states that there is no law against the fruit of the Spirit.  What law is Paul referring to?  What kinds of things can be under the law?  What things are exempt from the law?  Why is someone tempted to live under the law?  How does one break free from law-based relating?

Which of the nine fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) is easiest for you to express?  Share an example of that trait being used in your life.  Which ones have others seen demonstrated in your life?  How are you stewarding the fruit?  What would you like to see change in your character based on this?

There is a spiritual gift of evangelism and a spiritual anointing as evangelist.  Why did God give these to the church?  Who do you know that is an evangelist?  Who do you know that operates in the gift of evangelism?  How do you compare the gift to the position?  What are evangelistic expectations of those that have not personally discovered the position or gift?

Jesus told the disciples to share the gospel from Jerusalem throughout the whole world.  What is the gospel message?  How can you effectively share the gospel while respecting another person’s free will?  What is the worse example of evangelism you have heard about?  What is the best example?  What key ingredients fit with your style of evangelism?

God is a spirit, and so are angelic hosts.  What are angels responsible for?  How do they do their work?  What is their realm?  What difference to they make to your life and calling?

We are spiritual being with a physical nature, while God is Spirit.  How do you relate to a spirit?  Where does the blending of physical and spiritual merge in your relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit?  Are there parts of your life (existence) that do not relate to the spiritual?  If you could make a change in your relationship with God, what would it be?

Galatians 5 outlines several promises to claim when we walk in the Spirit.  What choices are indicative of walking in the Spirit?  How do you practice this kind of living?  What can you do when you feel like you are walking alone?  How can you encourage a spiritual son to walk in the Spirit?
