Sometimes a person needs an increased vocabulary to be able to describe how they feel. How accurately do you think you experience emotions? What areas of your life have you guarded against feelings? How do you manage the risk of unpleasant emotions? How well do you engage with others when they are experiencing emotions? What is one thing you would like to change about your life in the emotional realm?

How can you discover your natural traits or tendencies? What character traits would you like to eliminate? How does your life reflect your choices to date? When is trust a form of idolatry?

We know that God is completely trustworthy, yet we can be tempted to trust in other things. What do you trust for your health decisions? How have you seen health insurance or other programs become idolatry? What do you trust regarding your finances? What are likely idols in this realm? What other idols compete for your loyalty? How can you change your allegiances?

We know the “right” answer: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart…” but how well do we follow that instruction? What or who competes for your attention regarding trust? What do you trust about your ultimate destiny? When are you tempted to trust in science, reason, fear, or self (mind, will, emotions)? How have you strengthened your ability to trust God?

How does your free will rule the day? How can God’s enemy exercise his will over another’s will? What have you done to manage your will? How do you keep your will in compliance with God’s?

When should you press in with God?

Discussion question for April 12, 2019.

Hannah prayed so hard that she could neither eat nor sleep as she implored the Lord for a child (1 Samuel 1). How do you know when to pray intently like this? How do you know when to let God be God and not try to push your agenda on Him? Who was in control in this interchange, Hannah or God? What do you learn from Hannah about asking? What do you learn from her about accepting the outcome (see verse 18)? What prayer requests do you have that warrant such devotion?

What does God say to do about the poor?

Jesus told the disciples that we will always have the poor with us. How are you addressing their needs? What attitude should a Christian have while helping them? What about socialism or communism? What role does social justice have to play in God’s will? How will you respond to God’s heart?

How do you know when to wait or contend?

It is a mark of faith to never give up, despite all the evidence to the contrary. It is a mark of submission to wait on the Lord. How do you decide when you should press in on an issue or fight for an answer? What indicators do you use to determine when you should be patient while the Lord does His thing? How has God spoken to you when you responded poorly to a situation? How has God surprised you in the past?

What are the key ingredients to hear God?

When Jesus was baptized some heard noise and others heard the voice of God. When God spoke to Saul on the road to Damascus, he heard words but others thought it was thunder. Who gets to hear from God? Why are some able and others note? What do you need to do to distinguish between noise and the words of God? Why wouldn’t God speak clearly to everyone? How can you encourage others in the art of hearing God?
