We talked about our “great cloud of witnesses” and how they increase our faith. What tangible testimonies do you hold on to? Whose faith story sticks out to you the most in this time of life? How do you collect good faith accounts for current or future use? Are you more encouraged by your own faith story or that of someone else? Where do you share your tangible testimonies with others?

Discussion question for October 11, 2019.

Hebrews 12:1 says: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses …” What are the characteristics of a great witness? How do you find situational witnesses, for such things as dealing with adversity, or challenge, or determination? How do you build confidence in the Word of God through witnesses? What are you doing in your life to be a witness for others? How would you like to impact your children, or spiritual children? How must your life change to improve your ability to bring a clear message to others?

We know that Jesus could not do miracles in Nazareth because of their unbelief, and that often He told people that their faith had made them well. How do you define faith? What causes unbelief? When it comes to healing, for yourself or a friend, how do you hold onto your faith when all evidence is contrary to healing? When should a person accept their condition rather than contend for healing? Who defines healing, and what is your advice to those young in the faith?

An orphan mentality is a frame of reference in which a person feels they do not belong in a family or group, and that they must protect and provide for themselves. What do you understand about belonging from the Bible? What scripture(s) do you claim to overcome orphan feelings? How do you live with the knowledge that you are part of something special? Who do you rely on for protection and provision? What role do you play in helping others overcome this way of thinking?

The Bible includes prophecies and descriptions about the future, such as the “end times” and “heaven.” How involved have you been in learning about the future through these writings? How has your worldview been impacted by the opinions and conclusions of others? What benefit is there to knowing the future? What drawbacks? How reliable do you believe your understanding of heaven can be? What brings you peace about God through the prophetic word of future trouble and / or rescue?

Read the long list of promises in Psalm 91. Which one(s) are most meaningful to you? How have you seen a promise fulfilled? What ways are most effective for you to remember such promises? What is your attitude toward conditional promises, generally compliant or resistant? How can you arrange your life to be in line for more of God’s goodness?

Restoration and recreation are two tools for gaining peace.  What makes an activity restorative for you?  How do you arrange your day for Sabbath rest?  What must you guard against that would disrupt your peace?  How do you combine your responsibilities with family, church, and work without losing your peace?  What would your life be like if you lived “from” rest instead of “for” rest?

A great deal of Christianity is based on doctrine, belief, and understanding. How do you bring your relationship with God from your head to your heart? What stands in the way of your heartfelt love for Him? How do your closest relationships on earth help you understand your relationship with God? How does your relationship with God affect your relationships with others?
